Auguste Rodin

Auguste Rodin died exactly a century ago, so let’s clear away the complacent adulation and rediscover the groundbreaking, ever-changing artist. At the Grand Palais in Paris, it’s time to concentrate on the Bourgeois de Calais (1895), the monumental, unfinished Gates of Hell, from which emerged The Thinker (1888), and the thousands of fragments of bodies – hands, feet, heads – found in his old workshops near Paris, which proved so influential to later artists, such as Picasso and Matisse.
